Building research capability through the Henry Schapper Fellowship

At the UWA Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy (CEEP) we're committed to building research capability and fostering collaborations with world-leading researchers. One of the ways we achieve this is in collaboration with the WA Branch of the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) through the Henry Schapper Fellowship.
This Fellowship is a long-standing initiative that brings internationally recognised leaders in environmental, agricultural and resource economics to WA to share their expertise, build lasting collaborations with our researchers, and inspire our research community. Each Fellowship, typically lasting one to two weeks, is carefully designed to maximise knowledge exchange and research impact.
The most recent Henry Schapper Fellow, Professor Katrin Rehdanz from Kiel University, was hosted by Dr Claire Doll on 27th March 2026.
During Prof. Rehdanz’s visit to UWA earlier this year, she presented a public lecture on the policy challenges of implementing Nature-Based Solutions, drawing on her experience as an environmental economics expert on Germany's Scientific Advisory Council for Natural Climate Protection.
She also delivered a seminar on Sensory valuation of nature: Stated preference based on visual and olfactory impressions, hosted an early-career researcher mentoring lunch focused on research opportunities in Germany and the European Union, and spent time strengthening research collaborations with many CEEP members, including Dr Claire Doll, Dr Curtis Rollins, Prof. David Pannell and A/Prof Michael Burton.
The Henry Schapper Fellowships have provided CEEP members with excellent opportunities to exchange ideas, challenge existing thinking, develop new research collaborations and expose our researchers and students to diverse international perspectives. The relationships built during these visits have often continued well beyond the Fellowship, leading to joint research projects, publications, grant applications and enduring professional networks.
Over the last few years, CEEP has hosted an impressive line-up of Henry Schapper Fellows, including Prof. Sven Anders from University of Alberta (hosted by Dr Claire Doll and Dr Curtis Rollins), Prof. Scott Swinton from Michigan State University, and Prof. Iain Fraser from University of Kent (both hosted by Prof. David Pannell). Each Fellow has brought unique expertise and perspectives that have enriched our Centre and strengthened our connections with the international environmental and agricultural economics community.
As environmental and policy challenges become increasingly complex, collaboration across institutions, disciplines and countries is more important than ever. Through engagement in AARES and participation in initiatives like the Henry Schapper Fellowship, CEEP continues to invest in the people, partnerships and ideas that underpin world-class research and evidence-based policy.
We sincerely thank the WA Branch of AARES for its ongoing support of the Henry Schapper Fellowship and look forward to welcoming many more outstanding researchers to UWA in the years ahead.
