Researchers and PhD students from across agricultural and environmental economics department recently came together for a specialist workshop exploring how econometric methods can be used to understand the impacts of weather, climate and environmental change.

Titled “Weather, Climate, and Agricultural and Environmental Outcomes: An Econometrician’s Toolkit”, the workshop was presented by Dr Sarah Whitnall, who shared insights and practical approaches gained through her recent research project on postharvest losses from temperature during transit (see blog).

The workshop was designed to support researchers working with complex environmental and agricultural datasets, covering key areas including relevant weather and climate datasets, selecting appropriate econometric approaches for modelling weather and climate impacts, managing differences in temporal and spatial scales, and estimating potential impacts under future climate scenarios.

The session provided participants with practical insights into how climate and weather data can be integrated into rigorous economic analysis, helping researchers better understand environmental risks, impacts and adaptation opportunities.

The workshop was attended by around 10 students from the PhD cohort, reflecting a strong interest from emerging researchers in building capability in applied econometric methods for environmental and agricultural research.

If you missed the workshop, you can listen to the recording on our CEEP Channel:

The workshop was supported by both the Centre for Environmental Economics & Policy (CEEP) and the Centre for Agricultural Economics and Development (CAED) as part of their ongoing commitment to developing research capability and supporting our postgraduate research students and early career researchers across environmental and agricultural economics.
